FAQs About Kentucky’s License Recognization

by

Joyce Bea Sterling, DREI

Q.  What are the educational requirements for securing a Kentucky Real Estate license if I already have
a real estate license?

A.  At this time, the only educational requirement is to pass a 40 question multiple choice law exam.
After passing the exam, Kentucky will recognize the license you currently hold.
That is, if you have a Broker’s license, you will receive a Kentucky broker’s license;
if you have a sales associate license, you will receive a Kentucky sales associate’s license.
You must apply for the same license that is active in the state where you reside.

Q. Are there any other requirements?

A.  You must be actively licensed, pass a criminal background check and provide a certification of status that your license is in good standing in the state where you currently reside.
If you have ever had a license in another state you must also provide a certification of status with the other state(s).

Q.  I am a principal broker, are there any additional requirements for me?

A.  If your brokerage firm is a corporation, partnership, limited liability company or business trust, you need to include your “Certificate of Existence” from the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office. (www.sos.ky.gov)

If you are a sole proprietorship and you use a name other than your legal name, you MUST include a copy of your registration from the County Clerk’s Office where you are a resident.
County Clerk information can be found at http://elect.ky.gov/countyclerks.htm.

If your firm is a sole proprietorship and you are using your proper name, you do not need to register with the Secretary of State or the County Clerk’s office.
However, it is recommended that you consult with an attorney about the appropriate legal entity for your brokerage.

Kentucky law requires your brokerage to maintain an escrow account at a Kentucky bank.  You will need to have the bank and the account number verified on your application.

Q.  Where do I get my application?

A.  You will receive your application from the PSI testing service once you have passed the exam.
You may register for the exam at www.PSIExams.com. Be sure to tell them that you want to schedule the License Recognition Examination
and inform them if you will  be taking the sales associate or the broker ‘s exam.
If you are unclear as to which exam you need to take, please contact the Kentucky Real Estate Commission to verify before scheduling your exam.   (www.krec.ky.gov)

Q. Is there anything I need to know to register?

A.  Yes, your school code is 9999 and you must take a copy of your license or Certification of Licensure to the testing service. If you do not have your license or Certification of Licensure with you, the exam fee will be forfeited.

Q.  Do you have exam prep materials to help me study?

A.  Yes.  Please visit www.KYRealEstateExam.com for access to online prep materials to help you pass!
The site also contains the links to the Criminal Background Check and other information you will need.
